Did you take advantage of spring cleaning and attack your craft room? I know I sure did.
My Craft Room
If you saw my craft room makeover video, I shared how I managed to build and organize my craft room for under $200. I used a lot of Dollar Tree items to emulate The Home Edit’s method of organizing.
I thought I would share some tips on how you can achieve an organized space for literally a few dollars. These are in no particular order, just the points that I tried to stick to when doing my craft room overhaul.
Dollar Tree food storage containers worked perfectly!
1. Shop Smart
Some organization systems are expensive if you’re working on a shoestring budget. When you need 36 containers like I did, but only have $50 to spend, you have to get creative. Dollar Tree is the first place I turn to for low-cost items.
I found a variety of these *food storage bins to use, ranging in size but perfect for what I wanted.

Also handy are fabric cube bins, locker bins, magazine holders (in the school section), and toolboxes to name a few. Check out your other local stores for items that are affordable and could be useful.
2. Repurpose
Look at what you have on hand. Maybe those food prep containers would be perfect to hold your scrapbooking embellishments. Have an old dresser in the garage? Give it a facelift for a fun sewing table that can store your fabric bolts. It’s always economical to shop your house because you could find that you have more than you think and it’s free!

3. Thrift It!
Finds from the thrift store were crucial to my craft room. I came across my cabinets while thrifting. If you watched the video of my craft room tour, you saw that I have 4 large units in my room which make up the majority of my craft storage. You may find several storage options like baskets or totes as well. The best part of all, you’re not paying retail pricing! Look for those “diamond in the rough” finds, like cast-off furniture pieces that need new life. Combine this tip with and you can create a custom system for huge savings.
4. “Edit”
Avid followers of The Home Edit know what this is. This is the process of just getting rid of things. And sometimes, it is the hardest thing to do. Maybe you hit a huge sale at Hobby Lobby and grabbed every ribbon you could. Unless you are actively using it on the daily, it might sit for a long time. By the time you get back to it, you may not even like it anymore. If you haven’t used it in 6 months, it goes. If it’s broken and you haven’t bothered to fix/use it, it goes. Like Clea and Joanna say, “you can have the thing or have the space”.
5. Label Everything!
Though it may seem redundant to label a clear container, really, how likely are you to stop and truly look at the contents when you’re cleaning up? Especially when you’re rushing to clean up your crafting mess before the kids come home or dinner needs to be prepared. Labeling your bins makes the clean-up process that much faster IMO. Now, I am fortunate to have a *Cricut Explore Air 2, but you don’t need one. You can pick up plain shipping labels at Dollar Tree, all you need is a marker and you can label all day long. This is also perfect for the locker bins or other items that you can’t see through.
Bonus Tip: Relax!

This is your happy place, your oasis. Make a space where you can feel comfortable and at home. I have a fun bench with my favorite plants close, pillows, blankies, all the things. I have a large flat-screen TV and my Xboxes in here along with my PC, so this room truly IS my happy place. And as an added benefit, I can also just sleep in here too! It’s my craft room, office, YouTube studio, closet, and bedroom all in one 96 sq. ft. space.
